Wonder Woman

A woman with whirlwind talent for heroics bursts her way into the DC film franchise.

Born and raised by the Amazons on an island invisible to man, a young woman, Diana, learns of her talents and origins as she develops into a courageous woman ready to stand up for a world who is seemingly undeserving of her powers.

Gal Gadot heads up the casting as Wonder Woman and does an exceptionally elegant job of showcasing the characters uncompromising strength, coupled with her emotional fragility throughout the film. It is with a breath of fresh air that Gadot injects the modern woman into a formally token female superhero.

The resilience of the character throughout the plot enables the film to keep a pace with which an audience becomes absorbed; from the origins of the character to the break-out of her instinctive heroics, DC have finally managed to successfully adapt a character from page to screen without too much devastation.

Whilst the film is by no means perfect, I’m looking at you special effects team, it is certainly a step in the right direction for DC and gives fans hope for the forthcoming films expected later this year.

Suicide Squad

Completely mad, devastatingly colourful, but epic nonetheless.

An unlikely troop of meta-human villains hit the streets as a newly formed band of heroes to tackle The Enchantress.

A new brand of superhero is brought to the big screen in an ingenious turnaround of classic comic book fiends. 

In a unique outlook on superhero life, this film questions every superhero stereotype that has ever existed; turns out you can turn the baddies into goodies after all.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the acting talent. On the whole the casting is gloriously successful, with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn being a particularly excellent choice.

But with all things in life, nothing is ever perfect, and Cara Delevinge as The Enchantress is about as far away from perfect as one could get. 

She just can’t pull off the badass vibe required of her, and her resolute smugness is nothing shy of annoying. 

The incessant action throughout the film however, is a thing of beauty. From the stunning slow motion bullet rainfalls, to the gymnastic like battle scenes, this film is ripe with stunt induced drama, and certainly a must see for all film fanatics. 

Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice

One man, two aliens; no it’s not a weird pornography movie, it’s DC’s latest attempt at a superhero movie.

I say ‘attempt’, because quite frankly it is underwhelming. 

Sure, they’ve stuck a new guy in the bat suit, but that just isn’t enough. Don’t get me wrong, Ben Affleck gave it a good shot, but Christian Bales shoes are big ones to fill.

When two franchises collide, it needs to be effortlessly executed. Did DC triumph in this area? Absolutely not. 

But it’s not all bad, the special effects, whilst potentially overcompensating for a rubbish storyline, were definitely a delight to behold; I mean, who doesn’t love an explosion or two?

Morale of this story; DC need to spend more time in pre-production, and less time with the stunts department. 

Deadpool

Not the most conventional superhero, but hey, we can’t all be perfect.

The story of Deadpool is one riddled with heartbreak, and yet at the same time fantastically humorous. This film tells the story of how a man struggling with a deathly disease loses the love of his life by becoming a heroic vigilante.

Crude is certainly one way to describe this guys heroics, but ridiculous is probably a lot a more accurate. With a hello Kitty lip balm always in his possession and a sparkly pink bag to carry his guns in, it’s safe to say this is no ordinary superhero story.

But who’s to say this guy really is a hero, I mean he doesn’t save citizens, nor does he spread goodwill, in fact he does just the opposite; filled with vengeance and eager to chase it, Deadpool finds himself on a bloodthirsty mission.

What starts out as a straightforward plan, soon turns into a chaotic plot twist, as Deadpool strives to defeat his enemies using a combination of wit and an extraordinary number of backflips.

However, before you all go running to this cinema, I feel I must warn you, this is not a classic marvel family film, it’s rated 15 for a reason; bloodshed, filthy language, and just about every sexual innuendo over the sun should be enough to put most mothers off.
